Some nights it is so clear to me why I for 18 years have kept my seats at The Royal Danish Theater in Copenhagen, yesterday evening was one of those. Together with my close friend Mr. Graae we had a wonderful evening.
It was the opening night of Kenneth MacMillans tragic story of Manon, the tone of the evening was already set by the monochrome stage curtain part of the stage design made by Danish Set & Costume Designer Mia Stensgaard, she has an amazing aesthetic that blows you away.
I saw it in the same set in 2003, but yesterday was simply beautiful and moving The Royal Danish Ballet was to the point and with a presence that was a joy to see. The Royal Danish Orchestra conducted by Graham Bond played Jules Massenets music like a dream.
The title role of Manon the pure girl that chooses money and wealth over love was danced by Soloist Alexandra Lo Sardo with a grace and nerve that was to die for and the fantastic Principal Alban Lendorf gave Des Grieux masculine desperation. The Royal Ballet was amazing and they have proven jet again to be one of the best Companies in the world and not only to be one of the oldest in the world from 1770s.
If you are in Copenhagen the coming weeks this is simply a most see and we can only hope that the Ballet will keep it en the repertoire for the next season, I will most definitely try to see it ones more this season.
