This Wednesday evening as guests for the royal galla dinner celebrating the Danish Queen Margrethe 75 years birthday, the clouds where gathering on a grey sky and after a windy walk from Christianshavn to the Danish Royal theaters opera house even the stage curtain was a graphic wonder in monochrome black and white, setting the mood for a bleak and dramatic Swanlake.
This new production by the Artist Director Mr. Nicolai Hübbe and his Deputy Ms. Silja Schandorff was a pure delight. The contrast between the amazing graphic set design inspired by swan wings by Mr. Mikki Kunttu and the Renaissance costume design by Ms. Mia Steengaaard strangely gives the ballet a very modern aesthetic.
The music must be some of the most beautiful ballet music ever and a piller in the career of Mr. Pjotr Tjajkovskij and always make my day. Mr. Hübbe and Ms. Scandorff payed tribute to history and the youth of Danish ballet by in the first act to put one of the greatest male dancers Mr. Erik Bruhns Prince solo in and the entertainment at the ball in the second act is choreographed by young talents Mr. Gregory Dean and Mr. Oliver Starpov.
A evening full a talent, magic and good company worth repeating.
