As part of CPH PIX the second movie about Mr. Yves Saint Laurent Saint Laurent made last year by Mr. Bertrand Bonello was showed to day. I went with the small Christianshavn Art Club.
Apart from major fix point in the life and career of Mr. Yves Saint Laurent the scandal of the 40’s Collection, the naked perfume photoshoot and the succes of Russian Collection, meeting Mr. Jacques de Bascher this movie have a different take on the story then Yves Saint Laurent by Mr. Jalil Lespert. I am not to say what movie is closest to real life, both have chosen to have the Autumn/Winter collection from 1976 know as the Russian Collection as the final clue of the movie. Mr. Bonello is very focus on the loneliness and struggles of Mr. Saint Laurent, you feel pity for the man but not in the saint like way you do in Mr. Lespert version. No doubt Mr. Saint Laurent was a pure genius and he did great changes to how we see fashion and especially the female wardrobe, but the real story maybe somewhere in-between the two movies.
In the Bonello version Mr. Saint Laurent alone in the center of the story and the mens fashion very inspiring, maybe because hi didn’t have the access to the Saint Laurent archives like the Lespert version where a big part of the movie is a great fashion show and here the people surrounding Mr. Saint Laurent are taking more room.
They are both a must see in there own right, but the story more interesting if you see both.
